Academic Enrichment

Students in the Workforce Development Program attend an Academic Enrichment class one day a week during the summer work experience.  In the Academic Enrichment class, the students learn about things in the real world, like economics and citizenship.  In citizenship they learn about documentation, government, and being politically active. In consumer-economics the students learn about budgeting and balancing a checkbook. They also work on school skills like math and English. They learn to work on problems without a calculator in math, and they learn grammar in English. Every week students read a book called Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens, by Sean Covey. It talks about what you should and should not do to be a successful person.

The students also learn about different aspects of employment. The students are also connected to a mentor service called icouldbe.org. Professionals talk to and answer any questions students might have about the a career - helping student search and explore different careers.

The students play brain games like Scrabble to help sharpen their skills in a fun way.
