People Incorporated founded the Southwest Virginia Housing Corporation in 2003 as an affiliate organization to better meet housing needs throughout the region. The Southwest Virginia Housing Corporation is state-certified as a Community Housing Development Organization (CHDO) to access additional resources and expand the availability of affordable housing throughout Southwest Virginia.
The Southwest Virginia Housing Corporation works in partnership with People Incorporated and other investors to increase the availability of affordable rental housing in the service area. The organization’s first rental project, White’s Mill Point, is scheduled for completion in late 2006.
Working in partnership with the Northeast Tennessee/Virginia HOME
Consortium, which is comprised of local governments from the City of Bristol, Virginia, as well as other counties and cities in Northeast Tennessee, the Southwest Virginia Housing Corporation has undertaken a project to purchase and rehabilitate existing homes in the city of Bristol, Virginia. Once rehabilitated, the homes will be sold to participants in People Incorporated’s Homeownership program. The proceeds from the sales will be used to purchase and rehabilitate additional homes, creating a revolving fund designed to increase the availability of affordable housing throughout the region.
