ABINGDON, VA—People Incorporated of Virginia, one of the largest nonprofit community action agencies in the nation, is celebrating 45 years of community and human development services for the Southwest Virginia region. Rob Goldsmith, president and CEO, recently unveiled the organization’s new public awareness campaign, “What can People do?” at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center to more than 300 employees and guests. “We wanted a new look that will represent us for the 21st Century and the next 45 years of service,” Goldsmith said.
The new campaign was developed by Hillhouse Graphic Design, of Kingsport, Tennessee, and included a 16-minute video highlighting People's history and the stories of six individuals whose lives were changed with its help. Hillhouse also produced a 14-page booklet, seven 30-second public service announcements for radio and television, and a special mini-Web site, www.whatcanpeopledo.org, containing video clips, an expanded timeline of People’s history and information about various programs and service areas.
“We are hoping that our new campaign will reach more people who dream of a better life and who, with a hand up, will do the work to achieve it,” Goldsmith said. “My goal is to prepare our organization for an uncertain future by working to make us stronger, more creative and flexible enough to continue our vital work well beyond our first centennial celebration.”
People Incorporated has grown from a small community organization started by a handful of community-minded individuals in Hayters Gap, Virginia, to six regional offices where it administers more than 40 programs including early childhood development, affordable housing, workforce development, and economic and community development. In 2008, People Incorporated served nearly 7,000 low to moderate-income individuals and generated an economic impact of more than $31 million for communities throughout the Commonwealth.
