BusinesStart is committed to promoting the economic self-sufficiency and a better quality of life for the region's citizens through small business ownership, job creation, and asset development. BusinesStart provides business and financial training, one-on-one counseling, and access to credit through a microenterprise loan fund. BusinessStart microenterprise loans provide up to $35,000 to start-up and existing businesses. Loan proceeds can be used for working capital, inventory, equipment, and property improvements.

Scott, Smyth, Tazewell, Wise, and Wythe counties and the cities of Bristol,
Galax and Norton, Virginia.
Eligibility/Income Guidelines
Customers interested
in applying for a loan may contact office for instructions. Must be a low
to moderate income borrower, or must create jobs for low to moderate income
people. Training and technical assistance available.

In 2003, People Incorporated Financial Services received a $1,000,000 grant from the Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission to establish a revolving loan fund for new and expanding businesses in Southwest Virginia. Capitalization of this fund enabled People Incorporated Financial Services to expand its lending capacity to $100,000 per loan, substantially raising the organization's visibility and impact on community development efforts. Small business loans are often targeted to emerging businesses that wish to expand or stabilize operations.
